AI Pioneer Selby Cary Brings Innovation to SMEs at Borders Expo
The world of artificial intelligence (AI) can undoubtedly be seen as complex and intimidating. However, one of Scotland’s leading tech entrepreneurs, Selby Cary, is on a mission to change that—especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
From Zimbabwe to Scotland: A Journey of Innovation
Born in Zimbabwe and raised in Zambia, Selby Cary made his first entrepreneurial breakthrough at just 15, by helping farmers increase productivity. Today, at 30, he is unquestionably one of Scotland’s most forward-thinking AI and automation innovators, having worked across retail energy, banking, the automotive industry, and mining.
After earning a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Heriot-Watt University, Cary built a career in cutting-edge technology. Notably, he helped develop robots for inaccessible areas and was an early employee of TestCard.com, a machine-vision startup used by the NHS to improve diagnostic testing for infections and diseases like prostate cancer.

AI for Asset Management and SMEs
Currently, Cary is the driving force behind MapifyLogistics.com, a company revolutionising asset management. Their technology, initially developed for Network Rail to streamline UK railway maintenance, is now set to launch in a broader, more accessible format. As a result, businesses of all sizes will be able to efficiently track and manage assets, ensuring timely maintenance and reduced operational disruptions.
“I’ve loved all the different things I’ve worked on,” says Cary. “At heart, I’m a developer, so I love building tools that make a real difference for people and businesses.”
Demystifying AI for SMEs at the Borders Expo
To share his expertise, Cary will be speaking at the Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce Business Expo on Thursday, 27 February, at the Macdonald Cardrona Hotel near Peebles. The event, themed ‘AI: Action Insights 2.0’, basically focuses on making AI accessible and actionable for business owners.
“AI can seem daunting because people don’t understand it,” Cary explains. “However, by the end of the Expo, we aim to demystify AI and show SMEs how they can use it to drive growth.
While large corporations have entire teams dedicated to AI, SMEs often lack the resources to explore new technologies. This is where AI can be a game-changer—helping small businesses automate repetitive tasks, streamline marketing efforts, and improve customer service.
“Most SMEs are focused on their customers, not AI. Whether you’re a baker, a farmer, or a retailer, AI can help by automating time-consuming processes so you can focus on what you do best.”

The Future of AI in Small Businesses
Looking ahead, Cary believes that SMEs stand to benefit the most from AI adoption in the coming years. Unlike large enterprises burdened by rigid structures, smaller businesses are agile and can quickly implement AI-driven solutions.
“For example, AI can automate marketing campaigns, generate content, send emails, and even handle financial reporting. These are tasks that consume valuable time but can be managed more efficiently with AI.”
His message to business owners is clear: “AI is here, and it’s transforming the way we operate. You can either embrace it now and gain a competitive edge, or watch as others do.”
Over the next few years, Cary predicts a surge in AI-powered business tools designed to help SMEs streamline operations and reduce costs. Therefore, the Borders Expo is the perfect opportunity for businesses in the region to explore these possibilities and find the right AI solutions for their needs.
