Aqualution Systems, based in Duns, was set up in 2002 by a team of scientists in the pharmaceutical industry with a strong commitment to solving real-world problems and making a real difference. Today, our business is the global leader in the science, manufacture and application of hypochlorous acid (HOCI) a highly effective, weak acid that is naturally present in the human immune system but that we commercially manufacture through our unique electro-dialysis technology to produce the only stable bottled hypochlorous acid product in the world.

To satisfy this demand we have been able to invest in a number of areas, in particular in recruiting a number of key members of staff both within the factory itself and also senior positions to continue to drive our Salvesan sales globally and to support our development into new markets such as medical devices.

Since May 2020 we have recruited 12 new team members increasing the team by 240%. Hires included four new factory staff, a Quality Manager to oversee the detailed regulatory environment in which we work as well as our ISO accreditations and a Production Manager to manage procurement and support operations. We have also boosted our senior management team with three new Directors covering Marketing, Commercial and Finance, all women over the age of 40.

Women make up a big proportion of our team; just under 60% of our entire workforce are women compared to a national average of just 10% in manufacturing and four out of seven of our senior management team are also women.

We are proud employers of a diverse age range with three employees under the age of 20, all paid more than the Living Wage, including one Modern Apprentice who has been with us as an electrical engineer apprentice since May 2020 and starts his Edinburgh College course in Electrical Engineering at the end of August and will continue to work with us one day per week. At the other end of the spectrum, 12 of our employees are over the age of 40 with two over the age of 60.

Our investment is paying off. In June we were awarded a medical device CE mark as the legal manufacturer of a Dental Water Line Disinfectant. This is a game-changer for the business, as this is the first ever medical device CE mark issued for a hypochlorous-based medical device and opens the way for further medical devices to be investigated, manufactured and marketed by our team.

Our future looks bright as we are now investing over £1m in a new factory in Duns that will include automated filling machines and clean rooms to support our expansion into the medical device market and pave the way for even more recruitment.

CEO Nick Meakin commented, “We’re a small but brilliant team that can make a big difference. We all feel strongly about leading positive change in health and hygiene and championing products and systems that drive lower infection rates. We are proud that we have been able to expand our team in the Duns factory, providing an innovative and inspiring place to work.”
