Borders’ Traits Key to Growing Business
Harnessing the renowned Borders work ethic traits and applying them to global projects has been instrumental in Aitken Turnbull Architects’ rise as a significant player in the UK architecture scene. By bringing valuable insights back to their regional roots, the firm continues to thrive.
Managing Director Alasdair Rankin attributes this growth to the dedication and talent of his team. With offices in Galashiels, Dumfries, Edinburgh, and Manchester, Aitken Turnbull Architects is deeply rooted in the Borders, a fact that underpins their success. Their commitment was recognised at the 2024 Scottish Borders Business Excellence Awards, where they won Business of the Year (11-50 employees).
Reflecting on their achievement, Alasdair shared a heartfelt approach to the awards evening at Peebles Hydro Hotel. Instead of focusing on impressing clients, he invited nine team members who played a pivotal role in the company’s success.
”“They are the reason we won," he said. “Our success is all about our people"

Despite their national expansion, Aitken Turnbull remains deeply connected to the Borders, where the company has been a trusted name since 1887.
“We were delighted to win the award, and I think there’s something special about the fact we are a Borders-based business. Yes, we’ve expanded more widely across the UK, but this is still our heartland and recognition at that local level that you are still part of the community, still known for what we’ve been doing since 1887 but there’s something new about it too, is really important to us.”
