Careers Fair programme run by DYW Borders

The season of schools’ careers fairs has begun with many Borders businesses taking the opportunity to meet the next generation of workers face to face.

The Careers Fair programme, run by DYW Borders (Developing the Young Workforce), launched this year at Jedburgh Grammar Campus with over 45 businesses, organisations, and education providers represented. This month Galashiels Academy, Peebles High School and Earlston High are also hosting fairs, with Selkirk, Hawick, Kelso and Eyemouth to come through January, February and March.

This events are designed to inspire and guide Borders teenagers into their chosen area of work, and firms from a wide range of sectors have signed up to provide that inspiration and guidance, including construction, health, finance, creative industries and engineering.

Barrie Knitwear are an enthusiastic partner in the fairs, and, as several staff shared their stories with local pupils at Jedburgh Grammar, Ryan Strachan, Recruitment Manager explained the benefit of the fairs to the company.

“One of our goals is to develop and encourage the next generation of talent,” he said.

“At Barrie Knitwear, we appreciate the work that DYW does in conjunction with all the Scottish Borders schools to provide Careers Fair events. We enjoy building links with schools, organisations, colleges and universities in order to offer exciting career paths for graduates at all levels.

“We are excited about the future and looking forward to engaging with aspiring individuals at these events which gives us a brilliant platform to do so.”

The DYW Programme Manager, Kevin Greenfield, said the fairs played a key role in connecting employers and future employees.

He said: “It’s about more than just recruitment; it’s about raising awareness and helping students see how their skills and passions can translate into real career opportunities. This kind of engagement is invaluable in building a more prepared and informed future workforce.”
