Holiday Lodges Aimed At Improving Peeblesshire Accommodation
Revised plans have been unveiled for a holiday village at the former golf course site at Rutherford Castle near West Linton, reducing its size from an original plan for 250 lodges to just 79 after community council concerns.
Landowner Sandy Lane Resort Rutherford Ltd says it has taken “community feedback” into account with the latest bid, and say the development, which includes a supplies shop, gym, and tennis and paddle courts, would bring 27 jobs to the area.
A spokesperson said: “The Scottish Borders is a region that has a unique history, culture and landscape, but is frequently ignored as a destination, often due to a lack of high-quality outdoor accommodation. A development such as Rutherford Park will serve to take advantage of the growing short break staycation market, as well as increased visitor demand generally, boosting bed nights and spend in the region.
“What is being proposed is a greatly reduced scheme from the one originally envisaged, taking account of community concerns, and will not only deliver an economic boost to the Borders, but also provide major ecological enhancements for the site, including the delivery of a minimum of 80,000 trees.”

Meanwhile, Borders councillors have giving the green light to the provision of 100 holiday lodges at Rosetta Caravan Park, to the north-west of Peebles.
The plans, submitted by Darwin Escapes, are for 100 lodges, 70 available for rental, on fields next to Rosetta House, with alterations to B-listed stables to create a visitor check-in hub.
Tweeddale West councillor Viv Thomson told the SBC executive committee: “There’s a call for more accommodation to bring tourism into the area and I think this has a good basis. It’s going to provide accommodation that we can bring people in to do cycling and everything.”
Fellow Tweeddale West councillor Eric Small said: “I think this will be good for the local area, and for the tourism that comes to the Borders. It will bring trade and business to the local shops, hotels and cafés.
“We’ve got Glentress on the doorstep, so it’s going to offer accommodation for people wanting to come on a biking holiday.”

Tweeddale East councillor Marshall Douglas, who chaired the meeting, added: “[Rosetta House] has been a beautiful building and in the past it was well used when it was a bar and restaurant. It’s good that it’s going to come back into use and it will be of great value to the tourist offering in that part of Peebles.”
The proposals were backed unanimously by the executive committee.
