Borders Chamber Christmas Networking

The SBCC Christmas networking bash was recently hosted at Clint Lodge near St Boswells. The festive event brought together a diverse group of professionals, including documentary filmmakers, podcasters, female entrepreneurs, and long-established businesses, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and opportunity in the Borders region.

Building Connections: The Power of Networking in the Borders

While much of the national business community’s focus this week was on the Scottish Government Budget, the SBCC Christmas networking bash provided a chance for local businesses to connect, exchange ideas, and foster partnerships. Trevor Jackson, Chair of the SBCC, highlighted the importance of events like this:

“It’s fantastic to have a social event where the focus isn’t solely on the nuts and bolts of business. It allows people to meet like-minded individuals and learn more about the incredible opportunities we have here in the Borders.”

The event showcased the Chamber’s broad membership, which includes established employers and innovative new businesses. Attendees also benefited from the Chamber’s initiatives, such as supporting female entrepreneurs and providing pathways for new ventures to thrive in the region.

“The variety of skilled professionals and businesses here is phenomenal, and that’s our strength. The Chamber brings us together and helps ensure the Borders’ potential is recognised far beyond the region.”

Welcoming New Members to the Scottish Borders Business Community

One of the newest faces in the Chamber is Alex Whittle, a professional photographer and documentary filmmaker who recently relocated to Innerleithen with his family. Set to launch a film and podcast studio in spring 2025, Alex praised the Chamber’s role in helping him integrate into the local business landscape:

“As a documentary maker, my work has rarely connected with the Borders. Joining the Chamber has helped me understand how local businesses operate and how my podcast studio can fit into the community. Networking like this is essential to driving visibility and building connections for a B2B business like mine.

Long-Standing Members Highlight the Chamber’s Value

The SBCC Christmas Networking bash also drew established members like Keith Mundell, Retail Visitor Sales and Operations Manager for Johnston’s of Elgin. With decades of experience in the Borders, Keith emphasised the strength in collaboration:

“More businesses working together means more power to the people and growth for the Borders economy. Initiatives like ‘Famously Hawick,’ where high-end businesses collaborate to boost tourism, are great examples of how partnerships create results.”

He noted that while the Borders region has traditionally been modest in promoting its unique talents and offerings, the Chamber is amplifying the area’s voice both nationally and internationally.

“The variety of skilled professionals and businesses here is phenomenal, and that’s our strength. The Chamber brings us together and helps ensure the Borders’ potential is recognised far beyond the region.”

Looking Ahead: Supporting Businesses for a Sustainable Future

Trevor Jackson concluded the event by reaffirming the Chamber’s commitment to supporting the rural economy and creating visibility for Borders businesses:

“As we head into 2025, we aim to create sustainability within the Chamber to support businesses of all sizes for the long term. The rural economy faces unique challenges, but with collaboration, we can thrive and ensure our voice is heard in the corridors of power.”

The SBCC’s Christmas Networking Bash highlighted the vibrant and dynamic business community in the Scottish Borders, showcasing the opportunities that come from collaboration and mutual support.
